As an active job seeker I fully understand the challenges of staying motivated during the job hunt especially at times when it seems as though you are making very little progress. I try and keep motivated by adding structure to my day and establishing a daily routine otherwise I have no doubt I would find myself quickly developing bad habits that would not only hinder my job search but also make it much harder to settle into a routine once I gain employment.
Read on to find out the some of the simple techniques I use to stay motivated and to gain an insight into how I typically spend my days looking for a job in Dubai. Enjoy!
07:45 - 08:00: 6 weeks into my Dubai job search I find myself starting to loose motivation. I decide to try and regain focus by changing to my daily routine. Instead of starting my day with a cup of tea and delving straight into the online job hunt I decide to set my alarm an hour earlier to start the day with a daily swim.
08:00 - 09:00: Swim a few lengths and dry off beside the pool. Take a shower and have some breakfast. Time to make a start of the day's job hunting activities.
10:00 - 11:00: Log on and check my emails. Look for suitable jobs to apply for, identify companies that I can add to my 'speculative application' list, review industry related news and articles for information I can share with my LinkedIn connections to improve my visibility and monitor newsworthy content I can share with my social media followers to promote this Blog.
12:00 - 13:00: I'm going to the the Saffron Brunch at The Atlantis on Friday so I decide to use it as an opportunity to network. As a typical introvert, networking is not something I find easy. To ease the process I designed a simple business card with my contact details and a QR code linking to my CV that I can quickly pass to any contacts I make. Sent artwork to a local printer.
13:00 - 14:00: Had some lunch and rechecked my emails. Wrote cover letters and adapted CV to suit all the jobs I wanted to apply for and submitted applications.
14:00 - 15:00: Got word that my business cards were ready so jumped in a taxi to collect them. This is the first time since arriving in Dubai that I've missed having a car. Taxi drivers don't seem to know where the offices are I need to get to. After driving for a bit I spot the Printers but it turns out to be the wrong branch. I hail down another taxi who again has no idea where it is. Harassed, stressed and no phone credit or data left to find out how to get where I needed to be I decide to call it a day and head back to my apartment to get more detailed directions. I contact the Printers on the off chance they will deliver - no such luck they have sent me a map with directions instead. Will attempt to find them again tomorrow.
15:00 - 17:00: Today's job hunt has been relatively slow I call it a day and head out for some time at the pool.
17:00 - 19:00: Shower and have dinner. Check my social media accounts and emails. Read some online articles to keep up to date with latest industry developments.
19:00 - 20:00: Go on a power walk around Dubai Marina.
20:00 - 22:00: Start a free online course to try and add more skills to my CV to help with my continued job search and ongoing personal development.
22:00 - 00:00: Wind down and relax by curling up with a good book.
00:00: Lights out. Time to recharge the batteries. Tomorrow is another day.
